Nd for the next 15 or so years, Apple leveraged the power of Objective-C to help create the software behind their runaway successes such as the iPod, iPhone, iPad, Apple watch and Apple TV, and CarPlay products.īut as with anything else in technology, nothing lasts forever, and technology, in particular ages incredibly fast. The NeXT operating system, built with the Objective-C programming language, thus became the primary programming language behind Apple’s operating system OS X. Ironically, when Apple decided to shop around for an operating system developed by other companies, it came down to a choice between two competing operating systems, the Be Operating system and the NeXT OS from Steve Jobs.Īpple decided to choose Steve Jobs and his NeXT operating system. In the years after Apple ousted Jobs, Apple wanted to replace their aging operating system with something more modern, to compete with the rising dominance of Microsoft and their Windows operating system.īut their efforts weren’t getting them anywhere as they got stuck in a quagmire of delays and failures. Jobs used the Objective-C programming language to create their NeXT operating system for their NeXT computer system hardware. Objective-C was really a superset of the C programming language with extensions that modified C to become object oriented. C++ was released at about the time that Jobs began thinking about creating NeXT Computers, but for whatever reason, Jobs picked another competing language called Objective-C. At the time, there weren’t that many choices around for OOP languages. The first thing Steve needed was an object oriented programming language.
When Steve Jobs was originally ousted from Apple Computer back in 1985, he decided to start up a new computer company called NeXT Computers, to compete against IBM and Apple. Objective-C, as a language, actually existed even earlier than that. Up until the Swift announcement, Apple’s primary software programming language, Objective-C, served as Apple’s primary application programming language since the debut of Mac OS X in early 2001. It understandably rocked the Apple developer world. They announced a brand new flagship software programming language called Swift, which would serve as their go forward language to create iOS, Mac OS, Apple Watch OS and Apple TV OS application. In 2014, Apple dropped a little bomb of an announcement at their annual World Wide Developer Conference.
